↳

DNAi deployed an autonomous on-line inspection station for cemented carbide inserts: robot-fed computer vision detecting defects down to micrometres at the press-shop exit.

01 —

The Task

Context

Dormer Pramet manufactures tungsten carbide cutting tools where microscopic quality issues shorten tool life. Manual microscope inspection after pressing was slow, expensive, and subjective.

DNAi designed an end-to-end autonomous inspection cell at the press-shop output combining robotics, optics, and CV software.

02 —

The Reaction

Approach

A robotic arm extracts parts from the line, presents them inside the inspection booth, and sorts pass/fail. The stack inspects sintered carbide parts 8-40 mm with sensitivity from about 10 micrometres.

Typical defect classes include micro-cracks, material residue, and chipped edges. Findings are highlighted for optional human review.

Technology

DNAi industrial CV toolchain: on-prem inference, calibrated lighting, robotics sync, AI defect detectors.

  • Current generation: one camera / one illumination path
  • Next-gen station underway: three cameras for 360 degree coverage, six light sources, precision metrology

03 —

The Effect

Outcomes

  • About 98.8% mean detection accuracy in production conditions
  • About 87% reduction in defective units reaching downstream QC
  • Lower reliance on manual microscope inspection

Note: This describes the autonomous press-shop programme alongside the legacy Insightful Quality Control story.
