DNAi case study: Agent-based epidemic simulation on European SHARE survey data (abmSHARE, Covasim extension).

The Task

Context

SHARE-COVID19 is part of the SHARE-ERIC research infrastructure. The SHARE survey covers 140k+ respondents aged 50+ across 25+ European countries.

DNAi collaborated with economists at the Economics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences to build simulation software for infectious disease spread on top of those population datasets.

Challenge

Realistic modelling must fuse demographics, social contact structure, mobility, and public health data which differ widely in shape and quality.

The Reaction

Approach

DNAi delivered abmSHARE, extending the open-source Covasim agent-based model.

Ingest SHARE, Eurostat, and auxiliary public datasets
Regional geography (e.g. NUTS-2)
Scenario controls for interventions (lockdowns, testing, vaccination)
Configurable JSON / CSV-driven experiments for researchers

Technology

ABM with agents representing individuals, calibrated on observed COVID-19 dynamics, supporting counterfactual and policy simulations.

The Effect

Outcomes

A publicly available toolchain used by SHARE research teams to run realistic transmission scenarios and compare intervention mixes.

The model remains extensible beyond COVID-19 for other pathogens and health-policy analyses.
